A German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, was the pioneer of homeopathy in 1796. He discovered a different approach to curing the sick, which he called homeopathy from the Greek word meaning ‘similar suffering’. Like Hippocrates two thousand years earlier he recognised that there are two ways of treating ill health, the way of 'opposite' and the way of 'similars'. The way of opposites would be to administer a drug that will mask the pain and give the animal a sense of well-being. The way of similars, the homeopathic way, is to give the animal a minute dose of a substance that in large doses would produce similar symptoms to the disease. In minute doses the homeopathic stimulates the animals’ own healing mechanism. Take for example the poisonous plant Belladonna, eaten in large doses this plant would cause a sudden high fever, pounding pulse, delirium and probable death. In a minute dose the homeopathic way it will trigger the animal’s own mechanism to heal similar symptoms. You may see these similar symptoms in a horse with laminitis.

Homeopaths believe in vital energy that is present in all tissues, cells and organs. The vital energy controls all essential body processes for perfect health and harmony. If the energy becomes weak and out of balance then the patient will become ill. Homeopathy works by stimulating the vital energy, reactivating the natural healing process in order that the patient may return to perfect health.

As a qualified therapist Margaret runs a busy homeopathic practice in Heywood in Lancashire. Having a large breeding herd of equines enabled her to gain valuable experience in the use of homeopathic remedies. She has practiced extensively using homeopathic remedies on her own animals for the last ten years. Due to her extensive knowledge as a homeopath treating a wide range of equine diseases she is sometimes called upon to assist veterinarians in the treatment of a number of varied and difficult cases. Her successes are many and include the assisted treatment of a young foal with emphysema whose chances of recovery would have been very slim indeed without the assistance of an equine therapist's knowledge of the therapeutic effect of homeopathic remedies. One evening she was called to a Welsh Cob who had been diagnosed with the equine disease Grass Sickness. He had all but stopped eating, drinking, urinating and defecating. Margaret arrived at seven pm and, after the administration of a number of homeopathic remedies, by midnight he had started eating and drinking again. He made a full recovery as shownin the bottom picture here. A more recent case was that of a young mare who had fractured her pedal bone. The prognosis for this horse was grave as, after twelve weeks box rest, no healing had occurred and weight bearing was always going to be a problem. An equine therapist was considered as a last resort to save the animal from being put down. Just five weeks under the care of Margaret at her specialist equine therapy centre, using a variety of homeopathic remedies, a new x-ray confirmed that the fracture had completely healed.
